I’ve joined Microsoft
I’m very excited to announce that, starting this week, I have joined the Developer & Platform Evangelism (DPE) group at Microsoft as a Principal Evangelist focused on Silverlight and the related components of Microsoft’s RIA platform. Specifically, I will be working on a variety of projects in the media and entertainment space. I will also be spending time working with the product teams to assist them with identifying customers’ problems and incorporating solutions into our products.
How did I end up at Microsoft?
As many of you know, I have spent most of my career working on Flash and AIR at Macromedia/Adobe. After leaving Adobe earlier this year I decided to put together a consulting business focused on helping interactive agencies and large enterprises understand RIA technologies and figure out how to incorporate these technologies into their long-term business plans.
Through this work I found myself spending a great deal of time speaking with design and development teams about the relative strengths and weaknesses of various RIA technologies – primarily the Flash platform, the Microsoft platform, and the leading Ajax frameworks. To my surprise, my views on Microsoft’s technologies became the most popular topic of discussion. As a result I spent a great deal of time diving into the details of Microsoft’s stack, particularly Silverlight, Windows Media Services & IIS, and the Visual Studio/Blend/SketchFlow tooling workflow.
My agency clients’ interest in the Microsoft platform was driven by a sudden surge of inquiries for strategic insight from their customers (some of whom I also ended up working with). The surge seemed to accelerate following the announcement of Silverlight 3 and Expression Blend 3 (particularly its SketchFlow feature). These agencies, which were primarily Flash/Flex shops, were suddenly very interested in figuring out their strategy for adding Silverlight development to their repertoire and they asked me for help.
Through the process of intensively studying Microsoft’s technologies I started to fully realize the potential of what they were doing and the unique position that they were in. Microsoft has the clients, tools, languages, frameworks, services, servers, developer resources, partnerships, desire, growing expertise, and trajectory to solve major problems that customers are increasingly facing. There are gaps in the platform and many areas to improve – but I really felt that Microsoft was prepared and committed to address those challenges.
As I continued to spend an increasing amount of time talking about Microsoft I focused on developing my relationships within the company so I could get access to the information that I needed to provide to my clients. Doing so allowed me to get a better idea of where things were headed and resulted in me starting to kick around the idea of potentially joining the company and helping them solve some of these challenges.
Over time I started having discussions with old friends who had worked with me at Macromedia and later left for Microsoft. I also spent time talking with several Microsoft evangelists, product managers, and engineering managers who I had gotten to know over the years. The overwhelming vibe was that they loved what they were working on and were very driven to build great software. I decided that I wanted to be a part of that.
It’s not a zero-sum game
The obvious question on the minds of my friends in the Flash community is “why switch teams?”
First of all, I love the Flash community and I’m very proud of the work that my former colleagues and I did over the years. I think Flash is a great piece of software. I also know – first hand – that the existence of Silverlight as a competitive technology has done more for Flash than most people realize. The end result is a huge increase in innovation and solutions development across the industry – and more options for customers.
We all know that web technologies evolve quickly – particularly in the RIA space. I want to continue to be a part of that and I feel that Microsoft is in the best position to take things to the next level. We may not be there yet but we’re working on some amazing things. The latest iteration of the tools and client have gotten Microsoft to the level that made myself and others take them very seriously. If they can accomplish this much since Silverlight’s initial announcement in early 2007 (just two years ago) imagine what they’ll do over the next two years.
I will soon be launching a new blog focused on the work that I’ll be doing at Microsoft. I’m very excited to be joining the team and given the opportunity to work on such an exciting technology.

We are looking to test drive silverlight but are concerned with the penetration rate being around 25%. Do you know what the major development areas are ? It doesn't seem to be a good solution for public facing projects. Also, do you know what the projected adoption timeline is for the player to reach around 80% ?

I was shocked when you left Adobe. I am very excited to see that you are still in an evangelist role in our community which is bringing lightweight interactive experiences to the world.
I learned a lot from you on the Flash side. I am glad to know that I now have a go-to-guy on the Silverlight side.

Im still in shock but as I tweeted yesterday this is one of the best moves Microsoft could do and I 'm starting to believe that it was also one of the best moves from your side too.
If there is something to blame Adobe for, since 2005, its letting you go.
All I can say is that Im happy that you will be able to do what you love most even on the other side.

That was certainly a wise move by Microsoft. They can use a lot of help to bring over people from the non-Microsoft-developer and designer crowd.
From what I experienced over the past couple of years the problem with MS employees appears to be this: the company seems to be treating them very well (even the "Bill review" apparently wouldn't change that). So much so that even the very good minded people at MS sooner or later leave sight of what the world out there ist really like: most people in the web world simply don't like the wannabe monopolist who boycotts agreements and standards whereever and whenever he sees fit. Everything at MS is ultimatley abput playing the game of becoming the first in every filed. At all costs. Once they achieve this they lose interest in what doesn't bring them money right away. Just remember the browser wars and what happened after it: IE 4, 5, 6. Pure nightmare from a webcoders point of view.
Mike, I hope this was a good move for you personally. Just don't forget about what people out there really need. The web is so much more then just a race between Adobe and Microsoft.

The reason Silverlight is at such an advanced stage already is because the developers haven't had to be as innovative or creative as the Flash development team, Microsoft have had all of the research done for them thanks to the hard work Macromedia and Adobe have done over the years. I'm just waiting for the inevitable announcement regarding Microsoft's version of the AIR Runtime – that will simply be hilarious due to the predictability of it.
Come on Mike, just be honest and admit that your move to Microsoft was for nothing more than the money. It certainly couldn't have been because of Microsoft's innovation and forward-thinking because they have none, anyone who has been in this game for long enough would know that.

IMHO, MS' ability to catch up and copy Flash is more telling of Adobe's failure to innovate to maintain a clear lead, as opposed to sitting on their first-mover market share advantage. MS continues to copy Apple yet Cupertino moves faster and more decisively than Redmond. If Adobe stays asleep at the wheel, MS is going to usurp other parts of their business such as ECM.

I agree that Adobe do need to wake up and focus more now, they have no choice really. The latest Flash Player developments are extremely promising though and if Adobe can remedy the rendering bottle-neck within the next year or so then that will certainly put some distance between Flash and Silverlight.
FYI I'm not anti-Silverlight, my previous comment may have given that impression, I just despise the way Microsoft operate and the overenthusiastic tripe that emanates from most Microsoft employees – it can be quite amusing sometimes as this article demonstrates.

I hope Microsoft would really "committed" to its own technologies this time. As I have observed, Microsoft always "replace" its owns technologies, Windows Form and Web Form are replaced by WPF, .NET Framework was changed grammatically since its premiere release. Investing efforts on Microsoft technologies is really risky to me, since they are expected to be expired someday.

If you think Silverlight has just copied Flash you should look a lot closer, there are some core fundamental differences between the two, and I guess what you would really have to say is that WPF copied Flash because Silverlight is based on WPF. As high level concepts, bot play video, support vector graphics and animation, but they are implemented very differently. I'm not saying better, just different.

I can understand any disillusionment you feel about Adobe. Perhaps there's a trend amongst RIA pioneers like ourselves. I'm losing my religion too. Adobe has floundered and stumbled too slowly to realise the vision and potential that guys like us envisioned years before Flex came on the scene.
