*Note: I’ve decided to stop using the “DAILY:” prefix on my daily posts because using the category “DAILY” seems a lot smarter.
While spending hours going through her MP3 collection and consolidating all of her music from various external hard drives onto her laptop, my lovely fiancée Liana realized that she was quickly running out of space on the 160GB hard drive on her MacBook. When I started digging around for an upgrade I found that NewEgg (a great place to get low-price computer equipment) was offering a Seagate Momentus 320GB, 7,200rpm, 2.5″ hard drive for US$99. This is an outstanding price for an outstanding hard drive. I spoke with my close friend and Mac guru Brian (twitter.com/btn) and he said it was the same drive that he put in his brand new MacBook Pro.
Installing the upgrade was MUCH easier than the brain surgery I had to perform on my old 12″ PowerBook G4 several years ago (I had to remove almost every single screw in that %$#&’ing computer!). I followed the directions on Macinstruct which started with a full backup using “SuperDuper!” (which was free). The only catch was that I had gone to the hardware store and purchased a T6 Torx Screwdriver when I really needed a T8 Torx Screwdriver
. So that was a bit annoying.
After the install I fired her up, installed Leopard, and transferred her data back over. The speed difference between the two hard drives is noticeable and I highly recommend the upgrade. Having all that extra space is pretty nice as well.

I paid for a WD 2.5″ drive @ the same speed+capacity 160 euros for my MBP.
I notice a big difference too and I can’t believe I haven’t upgrade it yet. Even the finder responds faster!
SuperDuper is free? Since when?
I paid for that but it definitely worths it. Its the one and only back up s/w solution out there.
As for the screws are really a nightmare on PPC machines. I had to replace HDD and SuprDrives on two 17″ and there are many many screws there :(
Intel ones are easier (at least the 15″).
For reference I used iFixit.
Not sure how new the news may be, but congrats on getting engaged, Mike!
I upgraded to a 320GB HD when my 160 died last year. Even if I hadn’t been forced by HD failure, the upgrade would’ve been well worth the price.
Now I’m eyeing the new 17″ MBP. The Apple Store wants and eye-gouging $1200 for an extra 4GB of RAM! So, going from 2GB to 4GB costs $150, while going from 4 to 8 costs $1200. Your price per gig jumps from $75 to $300. Neat-o! ;-P
