[video] Cingular + iTunes: “Make me dance”

One of my colleagues just sent me this link. Apparently Cingluar Wireless will be the first to carry the new Motorola Rockr mobile phone with support for Apple’s iTunes music store and software.
Check out their cool use of Flash video for viral marketing purposes: http://www.makemedance.com/.
Which do you think will become the dominant device, consuming the others?
1) Mobile phones adding PDA/MP3/Gaming (ex: Nokia 6680)
2) PDAs adding Phone/MP3/Gaming (ex: HP iPaq 6300 series)
3) iPods (MP3 players) adding Phone/PDA/Gaming
4) Portable gaming systems adding Phone/PDA/Wi-Fi (ex: PSP)

I have little faith in wireless providers, they seem to do all they can to cripple features and prevent users from using technology to it’s full potential. (e.g. No Bluetooth file transfer, 100 song limit on ROKR regardless of storage capacity, etc.)
The PSP, however, has proven to be both copyright owner and hacker friendly.
But, if we look at Apple, they’ve succeeded by making devices that are simple to use and work well, avoiding confusing non-geeks with an overabundance of features.
My guess is convergence will never appeal to a large enough crowd, especially with gaming capability. The Treo does well enough without games, the PSP does well enough without being a PDA, and the iPod does well enough being simple. (The video and media capabilities in the PSP don’t warrant the same simple, pocketable desire as a music player does. We never had VHS Walkmans.)

My guess is we will see music only features of devices such as the iPod completely merging with mobile phones. And here are the reasons:
1) mobile carriers already have a billing relation ship with customers, to sell music is a “simple” step up.
2) many people still don’t have a computer and they probably don’t understand all that iPod/ music download thingy anyway (ie. my parents). However, almost everyone these days has a mobile phone (my parents have 4). Start integrating a simple to use interface for buying the music via your mobile network and you got these people hocked. It’s already happening with mobile ring tones (even my parents are talking about this).
3) it’s easy for the carrier to store a reference of all the music the user bought and then stream the content to the phone rather than keeping a copy on the phone. carrieres are hungry for content to justify their 3G investments. this would also somewhat provide a mechanism to bind users to that carrier which is good for customer retention.
I think the biggest hurdle for this to become reality is the complexe licensing the record industry subscribes to. Of course this is where Apple comes in… they seem to have managed to somewhat simplify not just the licensing dilema but also the get a grip on how to efficently sell to the customer.
I can see how another big player (Vodafone anyone?) might build a solution around Macromedia Flashcast and Flash Lite and negotiate their own licensing deals with the record industry.
The crazy thing is that the record industry seems to rather be interested in sueing the hell out of their customers than simplyfing their licensing structures and cashing-in by jumping on new distribution channels opened up by technology.
I hope this makes sense…

Good call on the 20D. I have one too and I love it. I would definitely recommend the Tamron 28 - 300 Di lens. It’s a great all purpose lens for most shots if you don’t want to swap lenses frequently.

Companies producing mobile phones will supply to it that the phone will be everything for the man, they will want to make the computer, the TV set, the radio, consoles from it for the game, and if fast connections come into existence it is possible.
