[Mobile] Nokia 6630 - my new Flash-enabled super phone
In preparation for my upcoming session at MXDU about Flash on mobile and devices, I ordered the new Nokia 6630 (unlocked version). This phone is not yet provided by any of the US carriers, but I assume it will be soon. As is the case with most new, cutting edge phones, I was able to purchase the unlocked version of the phone off the web (at a premium price). I got mine here.
Accoring to our mobile and devices team, this is one of the best phones to have if you’re a Flash Lite developer. It also has some nice features like a 1.3 MegaPixel camera, bluetooth, a bunch of rich media features, EDGE network compatibility (for next-generation high speed data services), and a bunch more.
After getting the phone to synch with my Thinkpad via Bluetooth I installed the Flash Lite 1.1 player. I then uploaded some sample apps that Macromedia mobile evangelist, Bill Perry, gave me.
Needless to say, I’ve spent most of the weekend building apps for my phone. It’s like discovering the world of Flash all over again. I’m finding myself figuring out all of the limitations of the device, learning the mobile-specific APIs added to the Flash Lite player, and trying to remember ActionScript syntax and APIs from Flash Player 4 - which Flash Lite 1.x is based on.
I’m really happy that I’ve been diving into Flash Lite development because I’m finding all kinds of opportunities to make the authoring experience better - which is one of my top priorities for the next release of Flash, code-named “8ball”. I’ve been doing a lot of research in this area over the last few months and I’m getting more and more excited every day. We’re making great strides in making Flash the common rich client run-time across all mobile phones and devices.

Great phone! I bought a 6600 about a week before that phone surfaced in Thailand - still waiting for it in North America. Planning on picking one up on my next trip.
One thing to keep in mind with that phone is the difference in processor speed. I’m not sure exactly what cpu speed it runs at, but it’s supposed to be MUCH faster than any other Series 60 device out there.
Also, did you have any trouble finding Dual-Voltage RS-MMC cards for it? Not sure why Nokia insists on changing their memory cards all the time, and going from the RS-MMC to the DV-RS-MMC is just annoying.
Flash Lite is such a fantastic technology (aside from all of my bitching about rollout) - and like you I’m finding the challenge of the devices limitations and Flash 4 syntax very exciting.
It really does feel like the early days of Flash again.

Yeah, I just noticed the whole DV-RS-MMC thing. What a disappointment. Luckily I’ll be in Tokyo 3 weeks from now - the mecca of all things digitial. I’m sure I’ll be able to find one bigger than the 64MB card that the phone came with.

It’s a pity they don’t have a phone you wouldn’t mind being seen with… dead!
I don’t know what the people at nokia smoke but they have been making some really ugly phones lately.
On another note, does anyone have any idea when EDGE is going to be available in the UK? I popped into a vodaphone store before christmas and they didn’t even know what i was talking about.

I have a 6630, it is nice, but whatever they smoke at nokia is bad, THEY FORGOT that the camera should be able to point towards the person that is talking too, so they added another part (do I have to walk around with that thing?) which is a camera that one can set on a table and have conferences. Also, I have never been able to do almost anything because NOT ENOUGH MEMORY comes up every time. I paid over 500 EUROS for this phone, it is a rip off!
