MDDU - Day 1 (cont)

Just arrived in Brisbane - my first time here. Wow, what a beautiful place. I’m now convinced that Australia is the greatest place on earth (even though I still don’t understand Cricket).

We’re staying at the Conrad Hotel which is, apparently, the old Treasury building. It’s a beautiful hotel.

(Taken from my Treo 600, which I intend to do a post about later)

The only strange thing I’ve encountered so far is the placement of the handle on the door to my room. It’s only two feet from the ground. I actually have to bend over to slide my electronic keycard in. I’ve never encountered this before. I have a few guesses that consider the age of the building, but I’m still not exactly sure why the handle is so low.

In any case, we’re about to head off to Daniel’s Steakhouse for what’s been described as a “fantastic dinner”. If it’s anywhere near as good as last night’s dinner in Sydney at Wildfire I may never leave this country. :)
G’day!

    heh, welcome to brisvegas :)
The whole door thing was due to the fact in the early days we brisbaneites were actually only 5ft tall - in that monkeys used to rule this city.

Actually its a good question, i’ve stayed there a few times and i’m 6ft+ so it always annoyed me aswell.

The hotel your in is pretty much Brisbanes best, so your in good hands.

    (Off to your preso now).

Was at your presentation today and enjoyed it. Wasn’t sure on your enthusiasm of Brisbane was geniune or whether you say that in all cities… coz you did visit Sydney (my home town).

    Enjoy…

Hi Mike. Enjoyed your presentation today at Brisbane and thank you so much for the prize of Contribute. I am so excited in learning how to use it properly.
    Thanks again.
    Enjoy your stay…..

    Hi Mike

I also enjoyed your presentation today, as well as the other presenters. Unfortunately I was one of the late arrivals and don’t know their names!

I was especially interested in the Future of Flash and am really really excited about the new release. As a designer I think it’s great that the new release will be targeted towards us… (was I supposed to keep that a secret?)

Just for a laugh - and in no way intended to offend - my partner and I think your voice is very similar to the news guy/reporter on The Simpsons…

I hope you enjoy your trip Down Under. Come back and visit us soon!

“a,” I can vouch for Mike that he is genuinely excited to be back in Australia again. :) BTW, that’s one of the best looking pictures I’ve seen taken with a Treo 600 camera.

That is a pretty sweet pic for a Treo 600, isn’t it?

So I’m starting to neglect my blog again - that didn’t take long. I still need to post the pics of the Sydney and Brisbane audiences. I forgot to take a pic in Melbourne (there goes the theme). I had so much fun in Melbourne and Brisbane that I was too, uh, tired when I got back to my hotel room to make any more posts.

In any case, I’ll try to get around to it today (back in Sydney now). However, it’s a beautiful, sunny day out and Manly (sp?) beach is calling my name…

BTW - Thanks for the comparison to Kent Brockman, Sofia. :-)

    My favorite Kent Brockman line:
“For a look at the traffic today, here’s Newscopter 7’s Arnie Pie with ‘Arnie in the sky’ “.

    Heh, get it?

    Hi Mike,

I went to your conference in Brisbane and it was great but unfortunately I had to run off and didn’t get a chance to ask you and Brian Chau the questions that the seminar raised.

I was very interested in the FlashPaper demonstration as it gave me a view into where my company can go with Flash. I work for ADL Software as a Software Developer / Web Designer / Flash Developer. Currently we provide a windows application that allows end-users to fill out, save and print forms. We are looking to upgrade the product and ideally would love to make the service web-based. However we have so far put off the web-based solution as it is extremely important to our software that we have strict X,Y positioning (which is not always the case with different web-browsers) and advanced printing capabilities.

Seeing as I am a Flash Developer I can see the amazing benefits of using the Flash Player to display our forms. However, working with other software developers who have not been exposed to Flash, they are a little cautious at the idea of moving our service to a web-based Flash application.

Basically what I want to know is how difficult (roughly) would it be to write a custom windows-based application that works similarly to FlashPaper to allow the publication of forms as Flash movies that allow advanced user-input with events, database communication (ASP.NET - to save information to an account on a server) and advanced printing capabilities?

Sorry I have written a novel but Flash is by far my favourite tool for development and if I could utilize Flash’s great features in our service that would be great. Thanks for you time Mike…

    Hi Richard,

You can take advantage of the PrintJob class of Flash MX 2004 to create flash movie with print capability. And Flash also comes with UIs (like text input) that respond to user interaction. And the data components simplfy the process of connecting to database. So add these all together it is possible to create a flash form that can be viewed and edited from within a browser and then the form be printed.

Having said that, dynamcially generated Flash Paper is another approach. Check out the following link in our site.

Can the printJob class be used in Flash MX 2004 Professional when authoring a swf that is published with the Player 6.0 and ActionScript 2.0 settings in Flash? Will that swf be able to print from a browser that only has the Flash Player 6.0 plug-in installed?
